George Thomas was the last keeper of the Sea Girt Lighthouse. George, his wife Minnie, and two daughters, Lucy and Alice, lived there from 1931 to 1941. When the girls were little, the family lived in several New York State Lighthouses. When Lucy died in 1996, the Sea Girt Lighthouse Committee acquired her memorabilia about growing up in a lighthouse in the early 1900's. The book, "Lucy Lives in a Lighthouse", is a fictionalized version of the memories of the Thomas girls. It was written to provide information, as well as entertainment, to the many children who come to visit the Sea Girt Lighthouse. The author, Sally Whitman, has been a member of the restoration committee since its beginning in 1980. The illustrator, Mona Kirk, is a member and past President of the Manasquan River Artists. There has been a historic association between the two groups, as the artists meet in the Lighthouse and have an annual art show on the lawn every July. And, of course, the Lighthouse has always been a favorite subject of artists in the shore area. The book is available for $5, and all proceeds are used for the continuing restoration effort. The Sea Girt Lighthouse will be closed to visitors for the winter season, November through March. Messages left on the lighthouse phone (732-974-0514) will be answered as promptly as possible. Books are available by mail. Enclose a check for $5.50 to cover mailing costs. Address to Sea Girt Lighthouse Citizens Committee Inc., Lucy Book, P.O. Box 293, Sea Girt, N.J. 08750
